THE LUCK OF ROARING CAMP
by Bret Harte
DESCRIPTION:

Bret Harte (1836-1902), a prolific writer, was fairly famous in his time. Usually fame does not last long. However, more than hundred years after Bret Harte’s death some of his stories are still of interest to contemporary readers. The Luck of Roaring Camp, written in 1870, was one of the authors first, and perhaps the best works. Brilliantly humorous, it depicts the lives of gold prospectors, outcasts from the bottom of society, devoid of moral grounds and spirit of humanity. Nonetheless, in a circumstance the most unusual and least probable for such a place as their rustic camp, they discovered in themselves the remnants of indispensible human values, not expected from this kind of folks.

Even if The Luck of Roaring Camp were the only work of Bret Harte, he would still be remembered as a great writer and humorist. His style, particularly in this story, influenced many other American writers. In the best works of O.Henry we can recognize a similar manner of introducing his characters, and unusual twist of the plot, which we enjoy so much in The Luck of Roaring Camp.
